How GPS vehicle tracking works — and what to look for in Kenya

A plain-English guide to how car and fleet trackers work, which features actually matter, and the questions to ask before you pay for installation.

Vehicle tracking has gone from a luxury to a basic requirement for many Kenyan car owners, fleet operators and insurers. But trackers and tracking platforms vary widely in quality. Here's how the technology works and what to look for before you buy.

How a GPS tracker works

A tracker is a small device installed discreetly in the vehicle and connected to its power supply. It does three jobs:

  • Finds its position using GPS satellites (and often other satellite systems for better accuracy).
  • Sends data — location, speed, ignition status and alerts — over the mobile network using a data SIM.
  • Stores data in memory when there's no network, then uploads it once the signal returns.

That data lands on a tracking platform, which you use through a mobile app or web dashboard to see live location, trip history, reports and alerts.

Features that actually matter

1. Reliable alerts

Over-speeding, ignition on/off, geofence entry and exit — and, most importantly, power-cut and tamper alerts that warn you if someone tries to disconnect the tracker.

2. Remote immobilisation

An immobiliser lets you safely stop the engine of a stolen vehicle from the app, which greatly improves the chances of recovery.

3. Useful reports

For fleets, the value is in the reports: mileage, idle time, after-hours use and driver behaviour. These are what reduce fuel costs and unauthorised trips.

4. Good offline behaviour

Parts of the country still have patchy coverage. A quality tracker stores data offline so your trip history has no gaps.

5. Professional installation

A tracker is only as good as its installation. Poor wiring can drain the battery or cause electrical faults, and an obvious installation is easy for thieves to find and remove.

Questions to ask before you buy

  • What is the total cost — device, installation and subscription?
  • Which alerts are included, and how are they delivered?
  • Is an immobiliser included or optional?
  • What happens if the device develops a fault?
  • Can the data be exported or connected to other systems?
